ABSTRACT
This project was out of the necessity to
address the inherent problems encountered by DnT interior and exterior designs
company. The manual processes involved in the management of the firm were
critically examined and the flows noted. The software so designed offers to a
great extent, the solutions to these problems. The project went further to ret
the different techniques used in implementing the newly design software in
order to facilitate a broader understanding of the designed software by any
user. An information system is used to track and maintain records of project
schedules, designs, available services, customers’ enquiries, complaints and
recommendations. The computerized method of managing an interior and exterior
building space system modern airline reservation system also serves customers
and the management needs from beginning to end of each project, therefore
laying out management tasks for each project.

INTRODUCTION
1.1
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Interior and exterior design
is the art and science of enhancing the interior and exterior of a building to
achieve a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing environment for the people
using the space. An interior and
exterior designer is someone who plans, researches, coordinates, and
manages such projects. Interior and exterior design is a multifaceted
profession that includes conceptual development, space planning, site
inspections, programming, research, communicating with the stakeholders of a
project, construction management, and execution of the design.
Design management
is a field of inquiry that uses project management, design, strategy, and
supply chain techniques to control a creative process, support a culture of
creativity, and build a structure and organization for design. The objective of
design management is to develop and maintain an efficient business environment
in which an organization can achieve its strategic and mission goals through
design. Design management is a comprehensive activity at all levels of business
(operational to strategic), from the discovery phase to the execution phase.
"Simply put, design management is the business side of design. Design
management encompasses the ongoing processes, business decisions, and
strategies that enable innovation and create effectively-designed products,
services, communications, environments, and brands that enhance our quality of
life and provide organizational success (Fayol, 2014).”
The system under study (D&T paintings) is a
company located in Jalingo Taraba State. They specialize in interior and
exterior designs. The current system has leveraged on the power of design
management which has helped the company to attain significant heights. Their
process of management and operations is being handled manually which is time
consuming and less efficient. Because of the current method of management
(manual method), there is a bridge between the current system and her customers
or less patronage from customers.
With the advancement in information technology there
is a need to convert from the manual process of management to the computerized
method. This will increase productivity, reduce waste, be more efficient,
encourage customer engagement by developing a web-based platform that will engage
customers and help the management showcase her capabilities to old and
prospective customers.
1.2
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM.
D&T
paintings is an interior and exterior design company located in Jalingo, Taraba
state. Currently their mode of operations is based on the manual or traditional
method, this poses a lot of challenges to the management because it requires a
lot of paper work. When a customer wants a service, they will have to visit the
company to see either see all the available design or give their
specifications, make bookings and negotiate payment. On the part of the
management, keeping paper records is a tedious job, it causes a lot of problems
which are listed below:
·
Longer
processing time: As the records are to
be manually maintained it consumes a lot of time.
·
Paper
work: Lot of paper work is involved as the
records are maintained in the files & registers
·
Poor
storage: As files and registers are used the
storage space requirement is increased.
·
Accuracy:
As the system is in manual there are a lot many chances of human errors. These
can cause errors in calculating mechanism or maintaining customer details.
·
Unreliable:
Use of papers for storing valuable data information is not at all
reliable.
·
Difficulty
in keeping new records: It is difficult for
keeping all the new entries of members, their account and transaction details.
1.3
AIM AND OBJECTIVES
The
aim of this study is to design and implement an interior and exterior building
space management system with D&T paintings as a case study.
The
objectives of the study are listed below:
i.
Design a computerized
system that will enable customers to be able to view all available services and
make bookings from the comfort of their homes.
ii.
Develop a robust system
that can solve all the tedious tasks related to interior and exterior design
management.
iii.
To make the system as
user friendly as possible so that anyone can use it with little knowledge of
computers.
iv.
To eliminate or make
paper work as minimal as possible.
1.4
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This
study will serve as a launching pad for interior and exterior design firms to
enhance the recording system and management by computerization of their
operation.
This
project work will serve as an addition to student researchers and interested explorer
in this field.
Although
the system will be designed using D&T paintings as a case study, any other
interior or exterior design firm can use the system with little modification.
1.5
SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The Exterior and Interior Building Space Management
System is designed for any design firm to replace their existing manual or
traditional system of operations. The proposed system will contain the customer
and admin module to control the following; customer information and preference,
products, available services, and users. These services are to be provided in
an efficient manner, with the goal of reducing the delay and resources
currently required for such tasks.
